From Black Hole with its six flippers and “inverted gravity” lower layer, to the excellent Ripley’s Believe It or Not! table which was designed to cater to both beginners and veterans of pinball with its many easy goals, each table offers something unique. It’s important to keep in mind that they come from different eras, and many casual pinball fanatics will likely prefer one table over the other, but each table offers a great deal of fun. Suffice it to say that these four tables are excellent. In fact, FarSight’s mission statement of their goal to create the best pinball simulation stares you in the face upon starting the game for the first time.
Compare the virtual versions to images of their real-life counterparts side by side, and it’s evident how serious FarSight is about digitizing classic tables for posterity. The most striking aspect of The Pinball Arcade is without a doubt the enormous attention to detail that the four tables sport. The four tables included in the package, Black Hole (Gottlieb, 1981), Theater of Magic (Bally, 1995), Tales of Arabian Nights (Williams, 1996), and Ripley’s Believe It or Not! (Stern, 2003), are a mix of classic tables which offer a good variety for fans of pinball both old and young. While the Zen Studios games offer more modern digital incarnations of pinball, The Pinball Arcade is not just a love letter to classic tables, but a product that is overflowing with FarSight’s dedication and passion for the favorite pastime of generations who grew up in the tail end of the previous century. There’s a ridiculous amount of fantastic pinball to be had and the PC version plays great, though, so check out the free table and see if it forces you to buy a few dozen more.The ever-maturing downloadable space has allowed for some rather niche genres to find their audience. At the moment there doesn’t seem to be too much difference between the PC and PS4, based on the screens released so far, although both could stand to have higher resolution textures for the playfield art.

A full-sized screen with controller in hand on a platform that isn’t on the verge of retirement seems the way to go, although you could make a good argument for the forthcoming PS4 version using those criteria.
iOS is nice if you like touch-screen, but personally I can’t do a thing with ’em.

The XBLA version got bogged down in a legal quagmire when Crave went bankrupt and MS wouldn’t let Farsight self-publish, and the PS3 version has strange lag issues with the flippers that make landing a precise shot deeply annoying. While on the surface the PC version is just another platform for The Pinball Arcade, it’s got the advantage of being the definitive one. Anything more than that costs money, of course, but even if you never spend a red cent it’s still hard to argue with free pinball.

The initial download contains a fully-unlocked table, Tales of the Arabian Nights, complete with the bonus Pro Mode options. Months of beta testing, bug-eliminating, and general polish finally turned into a release product, and it’s following the iOS format of limited free-to-play. It’s been a long time coming, but today marked the release of the PC version of The Pinball Arcade.
