He performed at the Comedy Store, where Robert Townsend heard of him and asked him to be the warm-up comic for an HBO special. Soon afterwards, he moved to North Hollywood, California, where he met Martin Lawrence, who lived in his building. ĭavidson won an amateur stand-up competition at the Apollo Theater in 1987. He performed on a fundraising telethon for WHMM in 1987. He opened concerts for Patti LaBelle, Starpoint, and Kenny G. He continued performing in various comedy clubs throughout the Washington Metropolitan region, Baltimore, and Philadelphia. Early career ĭavidson started his career as a stand-up comedian in 1986, when a childhood friend convinced him to perform stand-up at The Penthouse strip club in Park View, Washington, D.C. He had jobs in the kitchen of the Walter Reed National Military Medical Center, cleaning at Roy Rogers, bussing tables at an IHOP in Wheaton, and working in the storeroom of Hechinger in Hyattsville, Maryland. After graduating in 1981, he studied communications and interned at the radio station of the University of the District of Columbia for one semester. He attended Rosemary Hills Elementary School, Sligo Middle School, and Bethesda-Chevy Chase High School, in Bethesda, Maryland.
They later moved to Wheaton, Maryland, then the neighborhood of Rosemary Hills in Silver Spring, and then Takoma Park. His parents divorced when he was five years old, and his mother and the children moved to Washington, D.C. He and his family had moved from Colorado to Wyoming to Oregon by the time he was five years old. He has two older white siblings, Michael and Beryle. His parents changed his name to Thomas Davidson when they adopted him. He was a child of an interracial adoption his adoptive parents are white, and he is African-American. Chang decided to fan those feelings and began taunting Troy as to what was the special present Jeff had gotten for Abed.Born Anthony Reed in Greenville, Mississippi, Davidson was abandoned in the trash at 18 months old, before being rescued by the woman who became his adoptive mother. Troy started to feel slightly upset that Jeff had gone to such lengths for his best friend and began to feel jealous. Back at the diner, Britta informed the rest of the study group Jeff and Abed would be late and they all waited anxiously for them to arrive. Jeff phoned Britta about the delay while he tried to convince Abed to come with him.

These plans included having dinner with Jeff in a fancy restaurant and having his first "real" conversation with him free of pop culture or meta references. He hadn't foreseen that Abed had plans of his own which would end up ruining Jeff's surprise party. When the birthday arrived, Jeff had each study group members, along with Ben Chang, dress as a character from "Pulp Fiction" and had them wait at the diner while he went to get Abed. At the time Britta worked there as a waitress and was able to get her boss Brian to agree to rent out the facility for the event. In keeping with the theme, he decides to hold it at the 1950's nostalgia diner called The Greasy Spoon. In order to keep his spirits up, he organized a Birthday party a few months later patterned after one of Abed's favorite films " Pulp Fiction". In the study group's second year together at Greendale, Jeff is concerned about Abed who recently had a mental breakdown before Christmas break (" Abed's Uncontrollable Christmas"). Employees wear green vests over white shirts with matching bow ties and arm bands. 1950's style accouterments and furniture such as a jukebox, posters, and neon lights set the nostalgic mood. A small waiting area is set up at the entrance for seating purposes and a rows of booths are lined alongside the windows. The diner is decorated in an Art Deco style with red and black tiled floors. The Greasy Fork keeps the traditional layout and floor plan of American diners with a service counter wand floor stools serving as the main area.
